About Luke

About Luke Hesketh, the racer…

The History…

Luke’s father, Gordon Hesketh, was an avid sports racer in the late 60s and early 70s, speeding his Triumph Spitfire to many SCCA wins.  When not racing, he captured 8mm video footage of memorable races such as the first Daytona 24 Hours, Andretti’s Daytona 500 victory, and Bruce McLaren at nearby Texas World Speedway.  Luke remembers watching this footage as a child, and being inspired to race one day.

The Passion…

Luke spent his childhood developing love for all things racing. When not watching his heroes get the most out of every car and competitor, Luke was desperately trying to beat his dad and brothers on their first kart. He balanced his time, watching world sports cars at Texas World Speedway, Champ Cars on the streets of Houston, and chasing his own entry into the sport. After finishing the promise to his father that he would first finish school, Luke began working to buy his first kart. A 1990-era Coyote, sporting a blueprinted Yamaha KT100 engine, would be the tool for Luke to explore his potential.

The Results…

2005

Luke ran three races in his first season as a racer at Gulf Coast Karters, winning two races including his debut, and adding a runner-up finish. In his debut race, Luke outlasted a national champion, on a better kart!

2006

In his second season, Luke ran seven more races, claiming two wins and four podium finishes with one fourth place “fluke”! The second win was remarkable, due to the fact that Luke encountered rainy conditions, yet had no rain tires. Faced with either retiring for the day or racing on slick tires, Luke chose the only option that involved racing. Very carefully, Luke slid his way down the track, and up the timesheets, earning pole position for his class, as well as out-qualifying most of the faster TAGs. When the rain lightened up, and the race was run, Luke found out he just might be the next “rainmaster”.

2007

In what would be considered a slow year, Luke faced many battles in the world of financing. Rather than join or resume championships midway through the season, he set his eyes on 2008. He did manage a 100% win rate, winning both of the races entered and garnering two poles.

2010

With the success that Luke had in karts, he has always sought higher steps and faster challenges. That said, LGH Racing will begin raising sponsor awareness for partnerships to place Luke in the Rolex 24 of Daytona, the Italian Formula 3 series, or an FIA SuperLicence in 2011. To do that, we seek sponsors for the remainder of 2010 so that Luke can begin training for the big time.
